It’s time for another look at the Metacritic rankings for 2023! With just two months left in a year that’s been absolutely jam-packed with incredible Xbox releases, it’ll soon be time to crown an overall Game of the Year.

Before then, we thought we’d take this opportunity to glance at the highest-reviewed games according to Metacritic (as of October 21st, 2023), which includes some amazing titles as well as a few notable absentees!

So, let’s take a look at what Metacritic is ranking as the best 10 Xbox games of 2023 right now:

The following list is based on games with at least seven professional reviews for Xbox on Metacritic.

  1. Resident Evil 4 – 91
  2. Diablo 4 – 91
  3. Street Fighter 6 – 90
  4. Quake 2 – 90
  5. Dead Space – 89
  6. Sea of Stars – 89
  7. Persona 4 Golden – 89
  8. Cocoon – 88
  9. Persona 3 Portable – 87
  10. Hi-Fi RUSH – 87

There are quite a few caveats to mention here. Firstly, The Witcher 3’s physical edition is technically the highest-rated Xbox game of 2023 according to Metacritic, but we’re not counting that as the digital version launched last year. A couple of expansions would also have made the top 10 in the form of the Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DLC (which has an average score of 90) and the Resident Evil 4: Separate Ways DLC (with a score of 89).

Additionally, if we took away that “seven professional reviews” limitation, the likes of Everhood: Eternity Edition and Marble It Up! Ultra would have made the list, and if we could extend that top 10 a little bit more, other games that scored an average of 87 (but with less reviews) include Monster Hunter Rise, Persona 3 Portable and Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew. Phew!

Obviously Metacritic doesn’t tell the whole story so it’s not something to take too seriously, but nevertheless it provides a nice at-a-glance look at some of the highest-reviewed games of the year. The question is, will anything else in 2023 be able to crack the top 10 or even the top spot itself? Baldur’s Gate 3 maybe? Let us know your thoughts below.
