The New Slim Model Digital Edition PS5 Is $50 More Than The Launch Model Digital PS5

Sony announced a brand new model of PS5, it’s a new, slimmer model of the console that’s got a bit more storage space and a detachable disc-drive, but its otherwise the same console.

It’s not officially called the PS5 Slim, but that’s essentially what it is, though it’s also arrived with a new feature for the digital version of the new model. It’s more expensive.

The digital edition for this new PS5 Slim will be $449.99 USD, instead of the $399.99 that the launch model digital edition currently sits at. This could partially be attributed to bumping the SSD up to 1TB, but that would be quite the leap for what works out to be about 175GB of more space, after the OS.

While there’s still stock, you can grab the launch model digital console for the lower price, but when that runs out the launch model consoles will no longer be manufactured, and this new, higher-priced digital edition will become the only option.

On top of the price increase, if you buy a digital PS5 Slim console, then later decide to add the disc-drive, that’ll set you back another $79.99, which is $30 more than you would have spent if you just got the disc-drive console in the first place.

Not to mention that if you want to stand your console up vertically, you’ll need to pony up another $29.99 to buy the stand that supports a vertical orientation, as it’ll be sold separately for this new model.

All of that makes it seem like the digital edition, rather than being the cheaper option, is the one with potentially more financial hurdles than the PS5 Slim that comes with the disc-drive.

Having a disc-drive also lets you take advantage of the used game market, and local retailer deals that at times beat the deals offered on the PlayStation Store.
