Microsoft’s Acquisition Of Activision Approved By Ukraine Following UK Block By CMA

Following news this week that the CMA has blocked Microsoft’s planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard in the UK, the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine has revealed that it has approved the deal.

Ukraine isn’t the only country approve the buyout of the publishing giant at the hands of the Xbox format holder; Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Serbia, Chile, Japan, and South Africa have all given the thumbs-up to the deal.

Speaking in a statement today, Ukraine’s regulator said that it didn’t have any concerns that the buyout would have a major negative impact on the competition in any relevant markets.

Microsoft has said that it aims to contest the CMA’s decision, with company president Brad Smith labelling the decision as “bad for Britain.” Meanwhile, Activision big cheese Bobby Kotick has said that “it is far from the final word on this deal.” He later revealed that he expects an “accelerated” appeal process in the UK following the CMA’s decision.

The CMA’s reasoning for blocking the Activision deal in the UK was due to fears it would “alter the future of the fast-growing cloud gaming market, leading to reduced innovation and less choice.”
