Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online At AnimeJapan 2026

At this year’s AnimeJapan, the world’s largest annual anime event, Bandai Namco showcased the upcoming Sword Art Online game Echoes of Aincrad.

Announced nearly a month ago, this new action RPG is set in the world of Sword Art Online, but separate from the previous SAO games and not starring Kirito, Asuna, and friends. Instead, you play as one of the other 10,000 players trapped in the game world of Sword Art Online and fight your way through the iconic floating castle of Aincrad.

Unfortunately, Echoes of Aincrad was not available for hands-on demo at the Bandai Namco AnimeJapan 2026 booth. However, various things were on display like the game’s Japanese case cover artwork and items for the game’s special editions in Japan.

Sword Art Online: Unanswered//butterfly is a promotional 110-minute CG anime movie for Echoes of Aincrad and will be included with the game’s Premium Edition in Japan and Ultimate Edition in the west. The main characters from the mainline anime and novels, Kirito and Asuna, will appear in this tie-in movie.

It is being directed by Tadahiro “Tady” Yoshihira, animated by Polygon Pictures, with character designs by abec and story by Sword Art Online creator Reki Kawahara.

Around the top of the above photo are items in Echoes of Aincrad’s Dengeki Special Pack editions in Japan: a stainless steel tumbler cup, 9 can badges featuring illustrations by abec, and an acrylic panel with an original illustration by abec and a foil stamp of abec’s autograph.

Below those are a few (but not all) of the items in the game’s Premium Edition in Japan: an ‘Unanswered//butterfly’ Special Box (containing the tie-in anime film on Blu-Ray and soundtrack on 2 CDs), 4 postcards, and an art book.

Echoes of Aincrad will launch on July 10, 2026 for PlayStation, Xbox Series consoles, and PC via Steam.
