Baldur’s Gate Is Being Adapted For TV Show At HBO Max, Craig Mazin To Act Showrunner And Writer

The Last of Us HBO showrunner Craig Mazin has revealed in a statement this week that he’s working on a HBO TV adaptation of fantasy series Baldur’s Gate, and will be acting as showrunner and writer on the project.
Mazin, who is currently working on the third season of The Last of Us, revealed that he’s a big fan of Baldur’s Gate III, having put in nearly 1,000 hours on the project. The Baldur’s Gate TV show will also be a continuation of the game’s story, not a retelling of an existing title.
After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created. I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.
Francesca Orsi, EVP, Head of HBO Drama Programming, commented:
We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Craig Mazin on Baldur’s Gate. His deep and long-standing passion for the source material paired with his remarkable talent for building immersive worlds filled with rich, compelling characters promises groundbreaking results.
Baldur’s Gate III was developed by Larian Studios and released in September 2023 for PS5, becoming one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful video games of this generation of hardware. Despite its success, Larian announced not long after the game’s launch that it would be moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons IP; sure enough, the studio unveiled its new project, Divinity, at December’s The Game Awards.
