Future Assassin’s Creed Games Could Have 2 Protagonists If There’s ‘A Good Reason To Do It,’ Says Assassin’s Creed Shadows Boss

Simon Lemay-Comtois, Associate Director for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has revealed during a chinwag with GamesRadar that future instalments in the franchise could implement two protagonists, providing there is a good enough reason to go down that route.

Both Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Assassin’s Creed Shadows feature dual protagonists, although Lemay-Comtois acknowledged that the inclusion of Naoe and Yasuke in Shadows proved far more controversial among fans.

Dual protagonists can be divisive along very strange lines, right? It’s not just ‘well, I prefer a war, therefore I prefer Yasuke’. Some people just don’t like one character over the other, and they don’t like to spend time with one. It was true with Evie and Jacob, but with Naoe and Yasuke it’s more divisive. And we knew this. We knew going into it, but I think it can split our fan base a little too.

I think the learning for us is that, yes, we could do more dual-protagonist games in the future – if we have a good reason to do it narratively and for the setting.

The inclusion of Yasuke, a black samurai based on an actual historical figure, caused a lot of backlash among certain pockets of the community, something which Ubisoft’s Yves Guillemot addressed recently. Speaking at Paris Games Week, the executive described the situation as being involved in a “battle against our fans,” and that Ubisoft needed to “stop focusing on those who hated us.”

Assassin’s Creed Shadow was released for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S in March 2025, and arrived on Nintendo Switch last week. Ubisoft recently confirmed that its second year of support won’t feature an expansion on the same size as Claws of Awaji, but will include “chunkier updates to shake things up.”
