Sony’s PS5 Low Power Mode Likely ‘A Trojan Horse’ For Preparing PS6 Handheld Support

Sony is reportedly pushing developers to crack down on using the PS5 Low Power Mode as a means of preparing for the launch of its long-rumoured PS6 handheld, according to a new report by reliable hardware YouTuber, Moore’s Law Is Dead.

Speaking in a new video, Moore’s Law Is Dead revealed that he had been contacted by a developer who has received emails from Sony requesting them to push the PS5 Low Power mode. The email included instructions and tutorials that mentioned developers should lower resolutions in order to maintain a steady 60 FPS, as well as identify ways to reduce how many CPU threads are used by the game.

As such, Moore’s Law Is Dead speculates that this is Sony’s way of preparing support for the PS6 handheld, which is supposedly going to launch alongside the main console.

It is becoming glaringly obvious that Low-Power mode is a Trojan Horse for getting PS6 Handheld support ready before its launch, and they honestly seemed a bit annoyed at how few devs directly support it so far.

Moore’s Law Is Dead has been a major source of info for Sony’s next-generation hardware plans. Back in August, he stated that the PS6 and its accompanying handheld are likely to launch in Fall 2027 — early 2028, with Sony kicking off manufacturing in mid-2027.

He also suggested that the console maker is following a similar philosophy with the PS6 as it did with PS4, whereby it is a system designed not to “go all out in specs so that it could have mass market appeal after the previous generation left some people feeling burned with how expensive it was at its launch.”

Sony and AMD previously announced that they had teamed up for Project Amethyst, which will birth new technology advancements that are set to define the next-generation of consoles.

Speaking in a video back in October, Sony’s Mark Cerny and AMD’s Jack Huynh detailed some of the features you can expect to see from this partnership, including next-generation AMD rendering tech, and Cerny said he’s “really excited about bringing them to a future console in a few years time,” which is obviously the PS6 in all but name.
