Square Enix dev says their relationship with Nintendo is “very strong”
The history of Square Enix and Nintendo is a long and storied one. There was a time when Squaresoft and Nintendo were thick as thieves, with almost every game in the publisher’s library making its way to Nintendo platforms. Then came the N64 era, which marked the jump of Squaresoft to the PlayStation side of things, and that led to quite a rift between Nintendo and Squaresoft.
While it took years and years for the situation to work itself out, Square Enix and Nintendo returned to working together with Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles on GameCube. This title was a very close, collaborative effort between the two studios, and it helped pave the way for the working relationship the two have in 2025.
Square Enix brought a ton of titles to the Switch, with more coming before the year closes out. We’re also seeing Square Enix go big on the Switch 2, once again showing that the relationship between Square Enix and Nintendo is rock-solid. In an interview with RPGSite, Square Enix’s Naoki Hamaguchi elaborated on where the two companies stand with one another right now. (h/t Stealth40k)
