Co-development and outsourcing firm Virtuos has laid off around 270 employees representing 7% of its global workforce.

The company said it’s slashing 200 roles in Asia and 70 jobs in Europe due to shifting industry demand. Fewer than 10 roles were cut in France, where the Oblivion Remastered team remains largely intact, it claimed.

“As game development grows increasingly complex, we are realigning our global footprint and capabilities to strengthen our offering in high-value co-development, ranging from full game engineering to advanced art, including creative content production and live services,” Virtuous said in a statement.

“This evolution involves a rebalancing of roles across our studios and geographies.”

In response to confirmed layoffs, workers at Virtuos Lyon have gone on strike to protest the cuts and safeguard the branch’s future, according to Origami reporter Gauthier Andres.

Shifting resources

Over the past year, Virtuos has expanded its premium co-development capabilities through acquisitions in North America and Europe, focusing on areas like VFX, design, and Unreal Engine programming.

The company is now shifting resources toward high-demand regions and services, which it claims has led to greater restructuring in its Asian teams to better align with client locations and evolving development needs.

Virtuos was founded in 2004 and has since specialised in co-development, porting, and game development services. The studio has worked on various titles including Oblivion Remastered, Cyberpunk 2077 and the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta.
