Around two-thirds of staff at mobile developer Ubisoft Halifax have filed to unionise with CWA Canada.

The union filed with the Nova Scotia Labour board after 39 of the studio’s 60 staff signed union cards. The bargaining unit will be formed following a secret ballot vote and certification.

A mission statement from the workers said they were not unionising in opposition of Ubisoft. Reasons highlighted include job security during a period of industry-wide uncertainty, studio closures and layoffs, as well as ensuring all workers – including those from marginalised communities or undervalued roles – are treated fairly.

“Fight for our tomorrow”

“Unionising with my coworkers at Ubisoft Halifax is important to me so that we have the strength needed to protect what we have today and to fight for our tomorrow,” said Ubisoft Halifax senior server programmer Thomas Gillis.

“With no end in sight to the industry-wide turbulence that sees studios shutter on releasing games fans love, it is up to us, the workers, to organise and demand a say in our labour, art and future.”

CWA Canada president Carmel Smyth commented: “We are delighted to have this talented and committed group join us. They are part of a generation that is making life at work so much better for everyone.”

Ubisoft Halifax has worked on mobile titles including Assassin’s Creed Rebellion and the in-development Rainbow Six Mobile.
