The Switch 2 has Nintendo’s best system launch ever
Friends and family like new ways to play.
Listen, you don’t need to tell me how popular the Switch 2 is. The hoops through which I had to jump to get one are evidence of that. But now it’s official. In just four days since its June 5th launch, the Nintendo Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide according to internal Nintendo sales data, making it the fastest-selling Nintendo game system ever.
Of course, you know such an achievement would have to followed by some PR speak from Nintendo of America President and Chief Operating Officer, Doug Bowser:
“Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go. We are thankful for their response and happy to see the fun they are already having with Nintendo Switch 2 as they explore new features and games that bring friends and family together in new ways.”
Yikes. I’m very far removed from Introduction to Public Relations, but I remember what a C- minus looks like.
Still, the author of the official statement is right. Launching with the wild new Mario Kart World, numerous fantastic third-party games (our reviews are underway, dear readers), and some exciting titles still to come (Donkey Kong Bananza, Metroid Prime 4, et al.) the new Nintendo hardware and control options are providing gaming experiences that Nintendo players have never seen before.
Of course, this demand means the Switch 2 is not easy to obtain. Pre-order and launch-day systems both sold out almost immediately, and many fans are still waiting for their purchase invitations to come from Nintendo. Supply will hopefully meet the demand soon. If you’re stuck waiting for that to happen, use the time to save up some extra money for the accessories. Or buy some Switch games that offer Switch 2 upgrade packs so you’ve already made progress when you’re done setting up the new system.
