A Minecraft Movie has amassed over $550 million at the box office.
As reported by Variety, the movie currently tops the box office having made $281m domestically in the US and $269.6m internationally.
“When we make films, we all hope they will connect with the culture,” said Legendary Entertainment chair Mary Parent.
“But when they do, they take on a life of their own. It’s like lighting dynamite.”
A Minecraft Movie is based on Mojang’s hit 2011 game, the best-selling single title in history with over 350m units sold.
The film features Hollywood stars like Jack Black and Jason Momoa, reflecting the growing trend of merging blockbuster games with celebrity-led movie adaptations.
Early success
The film’s half a billion milestone comes after it earned $301m globally in its first two days, doubling its $150m budget.
Despite weak reviews, strong US attendance – accounting for 52% of global revenue – helped fuel its early success. The film is now projected to be one of the biggest openings of the year.
