The Australian games industry generated AU$339.1 million ($212m USD) revenue in 2024.
This is according to the Australian Game Development Industry Snapshot report which shows that despite a challenging global development environment, the sector maintained a steady workforce of 2,465 full-time developers.
Moreover, 61% of studios plan to hire in the coming year, with 81% expecting their headcount to stay stable or grow in 2025. The report also revealed that 85% of the 137 responding studios developed games based on their own IP, with 93% of their revenue coming from outside Australia.
Victoria remains the leading hub for game development in the country, hosting 52% of studio head offices. While many studios operate across multiple states, 82% of employees are concentrated on the east coast, with 36% in Victoria, 27% in Queensland, 18% in New South Wales, and 1% in the ACT.
Supporting the local industry
“This year has shown the local games sector continues to build capability in the face of global headwinds,” said IGEA CEO Ron Curry.
“93% of the revenue generated in Australia comes from overseas sources, highlighting the popularity of Australian-made games to a global audience.
“Generous and globally competitive tax rebates plus direct funding from the federal and state governments continues to ensure Australian game developers can deliver amazing game projects.
Curry added: “25% of our survey respondents accessed the Digital Games Tax Offset last year, and just under 40% intend to do so this financial year. We must maintain this level of support to ensure the local industry continues to grow and contribute to Australia’s creative and digital exports.”
