The Witcher IV Developer Says Its Open World Doesn’t Need To Be Just Bigger, But Deeper And More Immersive
Phillip Weber, Narrative Director on CD Projekt RED‘s upcoming The Witcher IV, has said that the team is looking at a ‘deeper, immersive’ open world rather than just one that’s simply larger.
Speaking with VGC following the reveal of the game’s debut trailer at The Game Awards 2024, Weber revealed CDPR’s plans for the fantasy-RPG, stating it wants to improve on areas were it feels they can grow while maintaining what worked before.
We don’t want to break those core qualities that we established in the previous three Witcher games, but we do want to improve in other areas where we really feel like it’s something where we can grow. The open world doesn’t necessarily need to be bigger and bigger and bigger, but the open world can be deeper and more immersive, more systematic. I think that’s something that’s really exciting to look at.

Earlier this week, CDPR revealed that the map in The Witcher IV will be ‘more or less the same‘ size as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which of course was pretty expansive in its own right. One of the biggest changes to the Witcher IV is the fact Ciri is lead character instead of Geralt, a decision that CDPR described as being ‘the super right choice.’ Furthermore, the role has been recast; original voice actor Joy Wyatt has been replaced by Ciara Berkeley.
