Roblox is updating its child protection measures, bringing into force two key changes next month.

Firstly, users under the age of 13 will no longer be able to search, find or play unrated game experiences on the platform.

Secondly, social hangouts and free-form user creation experiences will be limited to players aged 13 and up.

Creators have until December 3rd, 2024, to fill out an experience questionnaire to get their experiences rated. Otherwise, they will lose access to any members of their audience under 13. Younger users will still be able to access unrated experiences’ details page via direct links but these games will otherwise be undiscoverable following the deadline.

Furthermore, even those players who do arrive on an unrated details page will be unable to enter that experience unless they’re 14 or older.

Protecting younger users

With ratings becoming necessary for younger Roblox users, the platform has clarified that role-playing and life simulation games will not automatically be restricted to users over 13. User creation experiences using 3D assets specifically will also not be restricted, provided they go through Roblox moderation.

Free-form 2D user creation will be subject to new restrictions, however, as will social hangouts, starting November 18th.

“We recognise the deadline is soon, but we greatly appreciate your cooperation in helping us ensure Roblox is a safe and civil place for users of all ages to come together,” Roblox shared on its Creator Hub.

Further enforcement around details pages is coming next year.

The update to child safety measures follows Hindenburg Research’s accusation against Roblox last month, claiming that the platform contains inappropriate content for children.

“As we grow and learn, we continually enhance our safety measures to keep users of all ages safe on our platform – and we need your help to achieve this,” Roblox’s post reads.

“Parents and young users need accurate information about the experiences they are playing. Moving forward, all creators must complete a questionnaire for each experience they want available for users under 13. This means that all unrated experiences will be filtered out of search and any public or recommended sorts for users under 13.

“Additionally, creators must ensure that all information (such as thumbnail, title, and description) on their experience details page for each experience is appropriate for all users, by meeting either the All Ages or 9+ age recommendations. We will begin enforcement of these requirements next year.”
