Supercell has invested in Barcelona-based studio Penguin Armada.

The start-up was formed this year by a team of ex-Omnidrome developers. The latter company employed 120 staff and was acquired by Scopely in 2022.

Penguin Armada is headed up by former Omnidrome studio director Gerard Fernandez as CEO. Co-founders include Elias Lozano Garcia, Iván Sánchez, Roger Ribas Moreno and Damien Yvray.

The new studio is working on a PC-first, top-down PvP 3v3 title. In a LinkedIn post, Fernandez said the developer aims to create “highly accessible, solid, balanced, and intuitive full co-op mechanics that are both enjoyable and rewarding”.

Scaling up

“When we set out to build Penguin Armada, our vision was clear: to establish Barcelona’s premier video game studio and create a game that players would cherish for decades,” said Fernandez.

“As we worked toward this dream, we knew that achieving it would require more than hard work alone. We considered bringing on an investor to help scale the company and ensure our game’s successful launch.

“From the beginning, we understood that we needed more than just capital – we needed smart capital. This meant finding someone who truly understood the intricacies of gaming, the evolving market landscape, and the unique challenges and opportunities of the industry, along with deep expertise and valuable connections.

“Along the way, we were fortunate to meet many outstanding investors who embodied much of what we were seeking. But one truly stood out. We found a partner who shares our values and long-term vision, and we’re beyond excited for what’s to come.”
