11 Years Later, A Watch Dogs Movie Is Still In Development, Now With “Talk To Me” Lead Sophie Wilde Set To Star
Ubisoft is working on a Watch Dogs movie, a new report from Deadline confirms, with New Regency to produce the film. Regarding cast, it looks like the star of A24’s Talk To Me film, Sophie Wilde, is set to play the lead.
If the idea that Ubisoft is making a Watch Dogs movie sounds familiar to you, it’s because you first heard about that 11 years ago. If that’s you, then this is also your confirmation that you are an aging gamer, who also still likely remembers Watch Dogs E3 reveal, and that whole debacle.
Yves Guillemot first talked about a Watch Dogs film back in 2013 during that year’s Gamescom showcase.
New Regency was the production company meant to work on the film all the way back in 2013, and is still working on it. Deadline also adds that the script has been penned by Christie LeBlanc, and the movie will be director by Mathieu Turi.
There’s no confirmation if any of the DNA from the original 2013 project has survived in this new film currently in the works, we also never knew enough about that original film to really test that. But surely, it would seem that this new project owes its existence to the 2013 project floundering for years.
We don’t know what’s been happening with the film since that time. Presumably it’s been back and forth in a kind of development purgatory, where decisions to move the project forward just weren’t being made.
That’s just speculation, but it’s not uncommon for projects in any entertainment medium to wallow in production limbo and in many cases disappear due to the project not moving forward, only to resurface years later.
Hopefully this time, the movie actually comes to fruition. A lot has happened, particularly for video game-to-film adaptations in the last 11 years, that could make this the perfect time for the film to actually gain some traction.
