Assassin’s Creed Unity PS5 Patch Isn’t Actually Native 4K But The Upgrade Is Still ‘Worth It’ Says DF Report

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Unity PS5 patch came out earlier in the year, and has been put under the microscope by Digital Foundry recently – who found that the it doesn’t actually run at native 4K resolution.

According to the pixel wizards, no console version of the 2014 French Revolution-set adventure game runs at native 4K, and the boost to 60 FPS is more of a target than an actual lock to that frame rate. DF explains that Ubisoft has patched the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Assassin’s Creed Unity rather than upgrading to a native PS5/Xbox Series X/S apps, removing the frame rate cap and adjusting rendering resolution.

The enhancements in terms of pixel counts and unlocked frame-rate firmly put this upgrade into the realms of “back-compat plus” – an area where the Xbox historically commands a highly significant advantage over PlayStation,” DF explains in their report.

So, what of the performance? Well, according to DF, the PS5 version clocks in at 2304×1296, which is about twice the pixel count of the original version of the game and “undeniably a better-looking game because of it.” The PS5 Pro has the same resolution, but the increased GPU power offers more fluidity. In regards to frame rate, the report states that the “majority of the game” performs in the window of 50-60 FPS.

Assassin’s Creed Unity was released for PS4, PC, and Xbox One in Fall 2024. The game follows newcomer Arno Dorian, who decides to join the Assassins Brotherhood after the murder of his father at the hands of the Templar Order. Players are able to explore a vast open-world Paris during the midst of the French Revolution, with the game adopting a new parkour and combat system compared to previous instalments.
