Eidos Montreal Has Reportedly Scrapped Wildlands, A Game That Cost Hundreds Of Millions And Has Been In Works For Over 7 Years

Insider Gaming has reported that Eidos Montreal, who overnight confirmed it had laid off over 120 people, has cancelled a project known as Wildlands, aka P11, which had been in the works for over seven years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

Sources told the site that P11 had been struggling for a number of years now, and during the course of its turbulent development period no fewer than four different game engines were used for the project. It also suffered from conflicts over its narrative director, and a budget that swelled to over nine figures. It was due to the rising budget that Eidos Montreal canned a number of other titles, including a new Deus Ex back in January 2024.

Footage that was viewed by Insider Gaming (on the condition that it would not be made available for public consumption), confirms that Wildlands was an open-world third-person adventure game, where players assumed the role of River. This character was part of the Spiritbounds, a group of teenagers who were able to fend off bad spirits with magical staffs as well as mount mythical creatures. River was accompanied by Redheart, a large moose-like creature that you could use to navigate the open world.

The report adds that Wildland was nearly complete, and had recently passed key milestones and had entered the debugging phase, with a release window set for later in 2026.

Back in January this year, Insider Gaming reported that the layoffs that had impacted Eidos Montreal the previous month were related to P11, with a number of staff being let go from the project. At the time, it was revealed via X user Timur222 that the company was working on a AAAA title using Unreal Engine 5, and Tom Henderson followed this up by stating it was indeed the aforementioned P11.
