Todd Howard Says ‘We’ve Always Wanted’ To Bring Starfield To PS5: ‘We Have A Great Relationship With PlayStation’

Fresh from the announcement that Starfield is heading to the PS5 after more than 18 months of rumours, Bethesda’s Todd Howard has revealed that he has always wanted to get the game on Sony’s platform, noting that Bethesda has always maintained a great relationship with the format holder.

We’ve always wanted to do it. I would say that we have a great relationship with PlayStation. We’ve been there for a long time with our games. So, I think with this one, we knew it would be a matter of time.

We’ve been working on it for a while, so we still maintained a close relationship. We’re still shipping a lot on PlayStation. People forget with Fallout 76 and its other updates and Skyrim – we had still been doing a lot of PlayStation work, even though Starfield wasn’t there. So we’re just excited to get it out there, to the audience.

Starfield is set to launch for the PS5 April 7, 2026, and comes with all previously released updates for the game, so you get a wealth of quality-of-life improvements in the packaged. Furthermore, it also includes the Free Lanes update, which is set to arrive for the PC and Xbox Series X/S versions of Starfield on the same day.

Starfield was originally released for PC and Xbox formats in September 2023, at the time was the first new IP from Bethesda in 25 years. Howard had described the game as “Skyrim in space,” and sees players joining up with a group of space adventurers who travel 50 light-years around the Sol System to obtain a series of mysterious artefacts. Starfield is powered by a heavily modified version of the Creation Engine, accommodating the RPG’s procedural generation system.
