Final Fantasy IX Animated Series ‘Black Mages Legacy’ Is Officially In The Works At EuroVisual

Final Fantasy IX‘s animated series looks to have finally made some progress according to EuroVisual’s official website, which confirms its tentative title is Final Fantasy: Black Mages Legacy.

The production studio revealed that the first season for the Final Fantasy IX animated show will run for 10 episodes, and each one will last around 22 minutes. An official blurb reads as follows:

Imel, Koln, Luciola, Théa, Fala and Doc, children of the hero Bibi, are the last dark mages of the four continents. Today, they live happily in the city of ALEXANDRIA, guarded by its inhabitants who are rather friendly, although sometimes very curious. Unfortunately, this peaceful existence was not meant to last… One day, Koln discovers Mel, frozen like a statue, in the inn where he works. Could it be the tragic legacy of their father catching up with them?

Not much else is known about the animated series yet but it is rumoured to be targeting a 2028 release. In regards to Final Fantasy IX in general, there have been rumour dating back a few years now that a full remake is in production. Initially, a Final Fantasy IX Remake was reported as being in the works by Jeff Grubb and was corroborated by Gematsu.

Fast forward to February 2025, and reliable leaker NateTheHate claimed that the remake was still in production alongside the now-released Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. Unfortunately, the same leaker later heard that the project was in trouble and followed this up in October 2025 with news that the remake may be on ice and wasn’t sure if it would ever see the light of day.
