Rumour – Sony ‘Backing Away’ From Releasing Console Exclusive Single-Player Games On PC

Sony Interactive Entertainment is reportedly looking to move away from bringing its console exclusive single-player titles to the PC, according to Jason Schreier of Bloomberg.
For quite a few years now we’ve seen Sony release a number of its major games for the PC, including Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War, God of War Ragnarok, Ghost of Tsushima, SackBoy: A Big Adventure, and more. However, Schreier believes the hardware manufacturer is now likely to focus only on live-service products for its PC release slate.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Triple Click podcast, the Bloomberg journalist looked to Marvel’s Wolverine as an example, noting that it’s only coming to the PS5, with no PC version in sight just yet.
I think for them, their strategy is like, live service games are coming to PC. But I think the sense I’m getting is that they’re backing away from putting their exclusive console stuff like traditional single-player stuff on PC. I mean even if they don’t, we are seeing Wolverine is coming on September 15th, and that’s not coming to PC. It’s coming to PlayStation 5 only.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it never came to PC, but even if it does you have a strong idea of what that is and that you need a PlayStation to play it at least for the indefinite future.
This report from Bloomberg echoes exactly what we heard back in November last year, when Jez Cordon said on the Xbox Two podcast that he’s heard Sony was looking to pull back its support for PC in regard to major tentpole games coming to the system.
Interestingly, a report from earlier this month stated that Sony had generated $2.3 billion by selling first-party games on other formats including PC, suggesting their strategy has been paying off extremely well. Note that this doesn’t simply include single-player games like those mentioned above on PC, but also the likes of Helldivers 2 and MLB The Show, both of which have come to Xbox Series X/S.
