Warner Bros. Discovery Teases 2027 — 2028 Will See The Return Of Some Of Its ‘Biggest Franchises’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games, JB Perrette, has revealed during an earnings call that the company is set to return to some of its biggest franchise across 2027 — 2028.

2025 was a year of reset,” he commented, noting that the studio previously got “distracted going after too many IPs with too broad a set of studios.” He added that while Warner Bros. has titles such as LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight and Game of Thrones: Dragonfire due this year, “the real fruits will start coming in ’27-’28 when we return to some of our biggest franchises,” he added.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced last year that it was undergoing a major restructuring that would see it focus on tentpole franchises including DC, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and Mortal Kombat. There’s already been plenty of chatter about a Hogwarts Legacy sequel being in the pipeline, with the original game having sold over 40 million copies since its launch in February 2023

NetherRealm’s last major project was Mortal Kombat 1, and while the game was supported by post-launch content, it didn’t receive as much DLC as fans would have hoped for. The studio has not announced is next project yet. Meanwhile, Rocksteady Studios’ last effort, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, was a critical and commercial failure, although there have been murmurs about them working on a new Batman game.

One of the major casualties to come out of the troubles at Warner Bros. is the cancellation of the Wonder Woman game, with its developer, Monolith Productions, also being shut down. In addition, the studio announced last year that it had closed Player First Games and WB San Diego.
