Constantin Film Boss Says Resident Evil Movie Director Was Given ‘Carte Blanche To Do Whatever He Wanted’ With The IP

Zach Cregger was given “carte blanche” to do whatever he wanted with his reboot of the Resident Evil movie franchise, Constantin Film CEO Oliver Berbin has told Deadline in a recent interview.

The new Resident Evil film is unrelated to the Paul W.S. Anderson films as well as 2021’s Welcome To Raccoon City, and doesn’t feature any of the established characters from the games. Speaking on Cregger’s effort, Berbin confirmed the direct was given “the carte blanche to do whatever he wanted to do with the that IP.”

With Resident Evil, we have had an incredible journey with one of the most successful international IPs of more than a billion dollars in box office for many years, and now we are creating something new – not just a new story idea, but to allow a new generation to take the IP into their own hands and form something different.

Filming on Cregger’s Resident Evil movie took place in Prague back in early November 2025, which revealed a snow-coated Raccoon City complete with a map of the town, wrecked cars, and major action sequences that reportedly included ‘gunfire, explosions and stunt driving.’ Cregger had previously stated that his movie “lives more in the world of RE2 & 3,” which makes sense given the Raccoon City location.

Resident Evil is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on September 18, 2026.

Anderson’s Resident Evil movies were hit-and-miss when it came to adapting the games. The original 2002 film introduced Alice, played by Milla Jovovich, who battles zombies in the Hive, a secret Umbrella research facility located in a mansion underneath Raccoon City. Resident Evil Apocalypse introduce Jill and Carlos, who team up with Alice during the Raccoon City Outbreak. Nemesis is also featured, notably wielding his signature rocket launch.

The action then moves to a post-apocalyptic US for Resident Evil Extinction, as Alice and Carlos teams with Claire Redfield’s convoy of ragtag survivors, and battle Albert Wesker in the follow-up, Resident Evil Afterlife, alongside the newly-introduced Chris Redfield. Leon, Barry, and Ada show up in Resident Evil Retribution, which takes place in an underground Umbrella testing facility, while Resident Evil: The Final Chapter seemingly kills everyone off minus Claire and Alice, in one last battle against Wesker and Umbrella.

Welcome to Raccoon City meanwhile combines the narratives of Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2 into a single night, so while Leon and Claire fight their way through the T-Virus outbreak in the city, Chris and Jill are battling bio-weapons in the Spencer Mansion.
