NiGHTS Content Drop Joins Sonic Racing CrossWorlds On December 24

SEGA has announced it will be unwrapping a festive treat for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds owners on December 24 in the form of the NiGHTs Content Drop.

The NiGHTS Content Drop will be available from 4.00pm PST/7.00pm EST on Dec. 24, and includes NiGHTS as a playable character, the Dream Sleeper vehicle, and special emotes and sounds. For those of you who are scratching their heads wondering who or what NiGHTS is all about, then here’s a brief history lesson.

Developed by Sonic Team, NiGHTS into Dreams was released for the Sega Saturn back in 1996, and takes the form of an action game that follows Elliot Edward sand Clair Sinclair, who explore a dream world known as Nightopia, where they are aided by the titular Nights to overthrow Wizerman, the resident bad guy who looks to destroy Nightopia and the real world.

SEGA even released a Christmas-themed version of the game in the shape of Christmas NiGHTS into Dreams in December 1996 in an effort to boost sales of the Saturn.

Players could grab the game in Japan as part of the Christmas Sega Saturn bundle, and in the US it was available with titles such as Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition or Sega Saturn Magazine and Next-Generation Magazine. In the UK, Sega Saturn Magazine did not distribute Christmas Nights until December 1997.

Sonic Team had originally wanted to develop a sequel for the Saturn, and got a prototype for Air Knights running before work switched to the Dreamcast. However, the project was cancelled by December 2000, and it wasn’t until 2007 that Nights: Journey of Dreams emerged for the Wii.

Sonic Racing CrossWorlds was released in September 2025, and you can read our full verdict here.
