Fallout Mastermind Tim Cain Has Rejoined Obsidian Entertainment Full-Time

Tim Cain, the creator behind the original 1997 classic Fallout, has announced he has rejoined developer Obsidian Entertainment full-time, and has claimed we won’t be able to guess what he’s working on. Colour us intrigued!

Speaking in a video posted on YouTube, Cain confirmed that he’s working back at Obsidian and is not a contractor, which means he won’t be dividing his team between the team and other developers.

I’m back at Obsidian. I’m there as a full-time employee and in-person, so not remote, and I’m not a contractor anymore. This means that I’m not working at other places, although there’s at least one game that I worked on [elsewhere] that I know is going to ship. I can’t talk about the project that I’m working on at Obsidian, just because that’s covered by NDA. Don’t bother guessing, you’re not going to guess right. I would probably say that I’m a lot less retired now.

Cain has a long history in the video games industry, having joined Interplay Entertainment back in 1991 where his first major project was The Bard’s Tale: Construction Set. After working on a few more projects such as Star Trek: Starlet Academy, he served as the lead programmer and creator on Fallout and the designer on Fallout 2, after which he co-founded Troika Games and worked on titles such as Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines.

The studio was shuttered in February 2005 following mass layoffs the previous year, and joined Carbine Studios where he worked until July 2011. He started working with Obsidian later that same year, with Cain working on Pillars of Eternity and The Outer Worlds, although from 2020 onwards he was employed on a contract basis, during which time he was involved with production on The Outer Worlds 2.
