Dan Houser Says Red Dead Redemption 3 ‘Probably Will Happen,’ But Feels Series Worked Best As ‘Cohesive Two-Game Arc’

Dan Houser, the co-founder of Rockstar Games and a major figure in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, has revealed during a chat with Lex Fridman that he feels Red Dead Redemption 3 will eventually happen, but isn’t exactly thrilled about the prospect.
Houser explained that the Red Dead Redemption franchise benefited from its two-arc story focussing on John Marston and Arthur Morgan, while each GTA game was more of a standalone narrative that allowed for multiple titles over the years.

Each of the [Grand Theft Auto] games was kind of a standalone story. It’s not quite the same. I think it probably would be, in some ways, sadder if someone continued on Red Dead, because it was a cohesive two-game arc. That might be more sad to hear someone working on that.
Houser added that another Red Dead game “probably will happen” as it’s such a huge franchise, and obviously he doesn’t have any say in it anymore. “I don’t own the IP. That was sort of part of the deal – it’s a privilege to work on stuff, but you don’t necessarily own it,” said Houser.
While we’re on the subject of Red Dead Redemption, Houser told IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey back in September 2025 that Red Dead Redemption 2 was the ‘best thing‘ he worked on with Rockstar Games.
