Sony launched the PS5 back in November 2020 in major regions including the US and Europe, although the console arrived right in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. This resulted in major shortages in manufacturing components, so once initial stock sold out, the PS5 was incredibly hard to acquire as retailers were only available to offer small restocks.
As a result of how rare Sony’s new console was at the time, scalpers took the opportunity to bulk-purchase PS5 when fresh stock arrived, before reselling them for exorbitant prices on eBay. Stock issues plagued the console for another 18 months or so, although nowadays the system is readily available. Sony has since released the PS5 Slim and the PS5 Pro.
