Bringing an exciting addition to the already jam-packed Pocket Gamer Connects Helsinki 2025 agenda, a brand new half-day summit has been unveiled for the conference.
Transmedia is one of the leading trends in the entertainment industry, from cross media IP (with game titles such as Super Mario, Minecraft and Sonic topping box offices, Fallout and The Last of Us scooping TV awards, and more), to sharing technology or technical insight (Epic’s Unreal and Unity tech, we’re looking at you), and entirely new experiences that blend different streams like the metaverse.
Finland, and the wider Nordics, are at the heart of these developments, with Sega actively quoting transmedia as one of the reasons to buy Rovio – adding Angry Birds to its stable of Sonic, Yakuza, Streets of Rage and other film-friendly brands.
Meanwhile, the likes of Supercell are busy crossing all the streams to bring top talent like John Cena, Chris Hemsworth and Spongebob into crossovers and adverts for games, whilst also working on various plans to bring the Clashverse to different screens – with a Netflix animated series first up.
With that in mind, Steel Media is excited to unveil its collaboration with the Helsinki Film Lab to bring some movie magic, animation insight and transmedia talk to the show on October 7th, right after the Big Screen Gaming Summit.
Not only will this summit share insight from big names, it’s continuing the ‘Connects’ mission to actively bring games companies together with parties representing film, TV, animation, music and other related arts and entertainment formats, via a curated match-making side event.
Beyond Games: The Transmedia Summit – sneak peek
Running on its own stage, the event will feature several sub-tracks containing talks and panels with professionals and thought leaders from the transmedia sector. Gazing into a cross-medial future, discussions will revolve around challenges and opportunities relating to IP, shared technology, new business models, investment programs, and more.
“We’ve always been interested in the space where these amazing creative industries meet, hence the Beyond Games tracks, but I’m really delighted to be able to push this one step further with this summit and help from the amazingly energetic folks at the Helsinki Film Lab,” said Steel Media CEO Chris James.
“Although there’s been challenges in the last few years, it generally feels like we’re on the cusp of a golden age for games and transmedia collaborations have a big part to play in this next wave.”
