The PS5 was released in major territories around the globe in November 2020, during the midst of the coronavirus pandemic lockdown. Sony had a successful launch period despite the difficulties of shipping a project during the height of the COVID-19 outbreak, although stock shortages plagued the console for the next 18 months or so. As a result of stock issues, scalpers quickly took advantage of the situation and began reselling PS5s at exorbitant prices online.

Sony has since re-released the PS5 in two more configurations, namely the PS5 Slim (Digital and Disc-based versions) as well as the PS5 Pro, which can be outfitted with a Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive at an extra cost.
