Wuchang Fallen Feathers Update Prevents Killing Of Historical Figures, Prompting Fan Backlash

Developer Lenzee Games has attract criticism from Wuchang: Fallen Feathers players following the release of the game’s latest update, which prevents the killing of historical figures.

While the update contained a number of bug fixes and general improvements, one change was particularly significant, detailing “adjustments to animations, values, and level design for certain NPCs and AI.” It also mentions the addition of new dialogue for some NPCs “to complete some plots.”

After downloading the update , players discovered that these changes result in some bosses and NPCs based on real-life historical individuals now collapse in exhaustion rather than being killed outright. New dialogue also means that some of them speak to the player and change the plot to reflect the fact they’re no longer dead.

Modder Lance McDonald touched on these changes in a post on X, stating that the changes are “actual censorship due to the pressure from Chinese players who were upset about being able to kill historically significant characters from the end of the Ming Dynasty.”

The entire plot of the game is about the Ming Dynasty coming to an end, and the folly of refusing to let it end, and the protag’s sister dying and the folly of refusing to accept her death. Then they do this mess and now I don’t even know what.

An example of one of the changes is the battle against Zhao Yun, as players now appear to be fighting his spirit rather than the actual character. He was able to be killed prior to the date, with his dying words being, “The mortal dream fades, my tale concludes, I understand now, as is as it should be.” Instead, he utters, “Ha, still set on this path? Good That was the trial’s purpose all along” before laughing at the player.

WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers takes the form of an action-RPG Soulslike set during the late Ming Dynasty period in the land of Shu, which is plagued by warring factions and a mysterious illness that spawns blood-thirsty creatures. Players follow Wuchang, an amnesiac pirate warrior who has to contend with her mysterious past while struck by the Feathering disease, as she navigates the depth of Shu as you battle grotesque creatures.
