Epic Games has partially won its antitrust case against Apple in Australia, meaning Fortnite will return to iOS in the country.

Epic’s flagship battle royale will make its iOS comeback via the Epic Games Store.

In a partial win for the Fortnite maker, the Australian court judged that Apple and Google’s app stores have lacked protections against anti-competitive behaviour. Certain claims were rejected by the court, according to Reuters, though the full 2,000-page judgment has not yet been publicly revealed.

Epic and Google both noted they need to read through the full findings, while Apple argued it faces “fierce competition” in every market where it operates.

Years in the making

Epic Games filed its lawsuit against Apple in 2020, the year Fortnite was removed from iOS around the world. This spawned a years-long battle in courts around the globe, costing Epic more than $100 million in legal fees but ultimately leading to Fortnite’s US return on iOS this May.

In 2024, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney missed GDC for the first time in 15 years to attend the Epic vs Apple and Google antitrust trial in Australia.

In 2025, at Unreal Fest he stated he would continue to fight for Fortnite’s return in other countries and to “free” other mobile apps worldwide.

Sweeney has celebrated this latest verdict with an X (formerly Twitter) post, stating: “Victory in the Australian antitrust proceedings of Epic v Apple and Epic v Google! Fortnite will return to the Land Down Under through Epic Games Store at a date to be determined.”

Meanwhile, the Epic Games Newsroom account posted: “The Epic Games Store and Fortnite will come to iOS in Australia. An Australian court just found that Apple and Google abuse their control over app distribution and in-app payments to limit competition.

“There are 2,000+ pages of findings that we’ll need to dig into to fully understand the details. This is a win for developers and consumers in Australia.”

After Fortnite’s return to iOS in the US, the game quickly topped App Store download charts above the likes of ChatGPT and Google.
