Japan’s top 3 best-selling physical games for the last 20 years are all Nintendo titles

Famitsu has put out their “White Paper” Preview, which is a look at the game industry in terms of reach, players, sales and more. The report is filled with all kinds of interesting information, but there’s one tidbit in particular that’s certainly of note when it comes to Nintendo fans.

Famitsu has taken a look at the top-selling physical releases in Japan for the last 20 years (2005 to 2024), and they’ve found that Nintendo games make up the top 3. You can probably guess the game in the #1 spot, but can you think of the other 2? Take a moment to conjure up some guesses and then read on.

Top 3 best-selling physical games in Japan from 2005 to 2024

  1. [Switch] Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo, released March 20, 2020) – 8,022,435 copies
  2. [DS] New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo, released May 25, 2006) – 6,435,077 copies
  3. [Switch] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, released April 28, 2017) – 6,167,617 copies

This top 3 just goes to show the dominance Nintendo has in Japan, and how incredibly popular the Switch is and DS was. It’s going to take some insanely big titles to come along and break into that top 3, but if anyone can do it, it’s Nintendo!
