Japanese games giant Nintendo sold more than 5.8 million Switch 2 units over the console’s first 26 days on the market.

This more than doubled the original Switch’s first-month sales, at 2.7m units.

The figure was revealed via Nintendo’s latest financial report, covering the first quarter of its current fiscal year – the three months ended on June 30th, 2025. As the Switch 2 launched on June 5th, sales numbers featured in the report were achieved in just under one month.

Nintendo did also note that the console has since surpassed 6m sales, and that demand for Switch 2 consoles is currently exceeding supplies in many countries.

The Switch 2 soars

This Q1, the Switch 2 outsold all original Switch variants like the OLED, Lite and the base model combined. It also outsold their Q1 totals from the past two years.

Furthermore, Switch 2 console sales have not only doubled the original Switch’s when comparing their first months, but have also already reached 43% of lifetime Wii U sales. Both successors to former industry titans – the Switch and the Wii – the Switch 2 has clearly positioned itself as the stronger follow-up in just 26 days.

After its full unveiling this April, analysts predicted the Switch 2 would become another “smash hit” for Nintendo, with projections at around 13m unit sales by the end of 2025.

Our Mobile Mavens also weighed in with expectations for the console, from its potential gateway to IP, to the opportunities it presents for mobile developers.

Significant sales

In Q1, Nintendo’s overall net sales grew by 132% year-over-year, up to ¥572.3 billion ($3.9bn). The “significantly” increased sum was attributed mainly to the Switch 2 launch, benefiting not only from the number of units sold but the higher price point compared to the original Switch.

Switch 2 software sales, meanwhile, totalled almost 8.7m units, with launch title Mario Kart World accounting for 5.6m of that figure. The title was revealed alongside the console and was the only new first-party game from a big Nintendo IP to have launched on Switch 2 in the quarter.

However, Nintendo explained that the bundled version of Mario Kart World wasn’t counted towards its total digital sales sum despite being a download packaged in with the more expensive Switch 2 option. This meant the company’s digital sales officially decreased by nearly 14% Y/Y during Q1, down to ¥69.8bn ($474.5m).

Overall, ¥555.6bn ($3.8bn) of Nintendo’s total net sales came from the Switch family’s hardware and software, while the remaining ¥16.8bn ($114.2m) came from IP-related income like The Super Mario Bros. Movie on streaming services and Nintendo’s mobile catalogue.

This marked a 14% rise in IP-related income from ¥14.7bn ($99.9m) last Q1.

Meanwhile, the company’s operating profit was up 4% this quarter, at ¥56.9bn ($386.9m), but ordinary profit fell 16% to ¥95.8bn ($651.5m). Net profit reached ¥96bn ($652.8m), up nearly 19% Y/Y.

The games giant started this latest fiscal year with at least 5,630 full-time employees, meaning it hired upwards of 455 new employees during the previous year.
