Tencent has soft-launched Age of Empires: Survival on mobile that gives the famous strategy series the Last War treatment.

First Fun’s Last War: Survival has been one of the most successful mobile game releases over the past few years. The title merges the 4X strategy genre with hypercasual gameplay in the form of gate mechanics in which players tackle hordes of enemies while retrieving unit multipliers and weapon upgrades.

Age of Empires: Survival looks to be utilising that same merge of gameplay styles and giving it a medieval theme. The title is currently listed on the Google Play store in Puerto Rico and the United States.

According to the store page description, the game features eight civilisations, with players able to recruit more than 40 legendary heroes. As well as the more casual gameplay, players can build cities and improve their technology as they expand their empire.

Genre fusion

To date, First Fun’s Last War: Survival has generated more than $3 billion since its 2023 release, according to AppMagic estimates. The title’s fusion of gameplay styles is not unique to Last War, having become an increasing trend in the 4X strategy genre.

Tencent previously released Age of Empires Mobile last year, mixing various genres into a variety of game modes. That title is said to have accumulated approximately $202m across the App Store and Google Play to date.
