Bandai Namco’s SD Gundam G Generation Eternal has surpassed $100 million in gross player spending over its first two months on Google Play and the App Store.

The latest game in the Japanese mech franchise released on April 16th this year and quickly shot to success, from $16m in its first week to $68.2m in its first month, according to AppMagic estimates.

The title went on to earn $110.6m by its two-month anniversary and has since reached $121.5m as of June 22nd.

On its most lucrative day so far, May 3rd, Eternal generated $3.5m in daily player spending.

This strong early performance also landed the game among May 2025’s 10 highest-grossing mobile titles by player spending, not including any alternative app stores or web shops.

It ranked just behind Moon Active’s Coin Master but ahead of Microfun’s Gossip Harbor: Merge & Story, Supercell’s Brawl Stars, HoYoverse’s Honkai: Star Rail and other popular games.

Eternal’s release followed one week after the new Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX anime premiered on Amazon Prime in Japan, with the same mech suits appearing in-game.

Legacy and strategy

The Gundam series has a 46-year history originating with an anime in 1979. Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Bandai Namco Filmworks (formerly Sunrise), the brand was fully acquired by Bandai Namco Holdings through its subsidiaries in 2020.

In the decades since the original anime, the Gundam franchise has spawned more than 200 games across consoles, PC, arcades and mobile. It has also spun off into SD Gundam G Generation, a grid-based strategy RPG series in which Eternal is the latest entry.

Gundam’s long legacy in Japan likely accounts for a large share of Eternal’s fast foothold in revenue rankings, with players in Japan having contributed 73% of global revenue to date, or $88.3m.

Shortly after its release, Eternal also ranked as Japan’s second most-lucrative mobile game of Golden Week 2025, only bested by $1 billion maker Pokémon TCG Pocket. Eternal therefore outperformed Monster Strike, Fate/Grand Order and other big games in the region over the lucrative holiday period.

But Eternal’s gameplay also appears to be a key factor in its early success, not just its brand name. After all, the new game has already surpassed the lifetime earnings of 2019’s Gundam Breaker Mobile and 2021’s Mobile Suit Gundam UC Engage, which sit at $115m and $106.7m respectively.

Gameplay involves strategically selecting a squad of mechs from over 500 units and deploying them tactfully into the field of war.

The roster has continued to expand since release with Gundam Deathscythe Hell and Duo Maxwell being June’s latest additions. Over 70 Gundam titles are currently represented in-game.

Bandai Namco also confirmed that SD Gundam G Generation Eternal has surpassed 4m downloads.
