007 First Light Dev Wants To Give Players ‘A Lot Of Tools To Feel As Smart As Bond,’ Doesn’t Want It To Be ‘Just Shooting And Shooting’

Jonathan Lacaille, 007 Franchise Director at IO Interactive, has revealed during an interview with GamesRadar+ that 007: First Light will offer players more than enough opportunity to get creative with missions thanks to James Bond’s array of spy gadgets, and won’t just be limited to shooting everything in sight.

We are leaning a lot on what IOI does best, but we had to come up with a lot of new things that IOI had to learn and to reiterate on to really bring the full Bond experience. For instance, driving, not done that before, and we’re doing that now.

Shooting usually was a failing condition in Hitman, and here it’s a big part of the game. We don’t want the game to just go by shooting and shooting and shooting. So we want to give the player a lot of tools to feel as smart as Bond in the game.

He went on to say that players will have access to gadgets allowing them to take “kind of varied and spread out” approaches to missions, although quite how those will be implemented remains to be seen. However, looking at how Agent 47 can get creative in the recent Hitman game with various tools at his disposal, IO shouldn’t have much trouble translating that to a Bond game.

007 First Light will provide an original story on the British super spy that depicts him taking on the mission to acquire his license to kill. Bond will be 26-years-old in 007 First Light, and the game will also feature appearances by M, Q, and Moneypenny, with inspiration for the narrative plucked from Ian Fleming’s novels and short stories for the character. 007 First Light is notable for being the first major video game to feature the character of Jame Bond since 2012’s 007 Legends.

007: First Light is set for release on PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S in 2026.
