The Hundred Line developer still in danger of “going under” following the game’s release
Much has been said about the development of Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy. The title, which launched for Switch April 24th, 2025, was quite a struggle to develop. The title was in the works for 7 years, a deal with a big publisher fell through, development was restarted in the middle of the project…the issues were plentiful, to say the least.
By far the worst thing to come from The Hundred Line’s troubled development is the fact that developer Too Kyoo Games took out a loan for the title, and then eventually went into debt. They were only saved due to publisher Aniplex coming in to help out, but that doesn’t mean worries are completely over.
Creator Kazutaka Kodaka has previously said that if the game doesn’t sell well, the studio “may be done.” Unfortunately, it still seems like some more copies need to move, as Kodaka recently shared the following statement on social media:
If I can pay off my debt early and secure enough operating funds for the company, I’d love to get started right away (on localization for other languages). But right now, we’re still on the brink of going under.
We don’t know how many units Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy has moved thus far, so there’s no real way of knowing how successful the title has been. The good news is that the game is still quite new, and positive word is spreading via press and players alike. Hopefully that’ll help the game cast a wider net, more copies will sell, and Kodaka and Too Kyoo Games can breathe a little easier.
We’ll keep tabs on this title and hopefully catch wind of a positive sales update in the near future.
