Research firm says it’s “not likely” Switch 2 price will increase due to tariffs (UPDATE)

As of right now, Switch 2 pre-orders are postponed in both the U.S. and Canada as Nintendo looks into the new tariffs announced by president Trump. Nintendo says the release date for Switch 2 remains June 5th, but pre-orders won’t go live until Nintendo figures out what they want to do with the price of the platform.

Earlier today, research firm DFC Intelligence offered up their two cents on the situation to try and figure out where Nintendo might go with the Switch 2 price. The company originally said that they are “modeling a 20% price increase over the next two years,” for Switch 2, but now they are coming through with some major clarifications that should make Nintendo fans incredibly happy.

The modeling above would have meant that Switch 2 could climb at high as $540 over the next two years, but now DFC Intelligence’s David Cole says their original messaging on the matter didn’t come across as intended. Now they’re saying “the reference to a 20% hardware price increase over the next two years applied to the hardware side in general and not just the Switch.”

Going from there, Cole said DFC Intelligence believes “much of the 20% increase was already baked into the $450 price.” Then in real music to Nintendo fans’ ears, Cole went further saying, “It is not likely Nintendo will raise the price, and if they do, we don’t expect it to be 20%.”Cole then wrapped things up with the following statement:

“…much of that increase is in the form of NOT discounting prices. So not necessarily a price increase but where we model a 20% price decrease in the next year or so we have the prices holding steady.”

Now we want to make it clear that this is all just predictions and analysis from DFC Intelligence. The only ones who know what’ll happen with the Switch 2 pricing is Nintendo themselves, and hopefully they give some clear messaging on that in the near future.

UPDATE: Game industry analysts Niko Partners have chimed in, and they also believe Switch 2 pricing will stay at $450 for launch. (h/t Stealth40k)

With tariffs on Vietnam temporarily reduced for the next 90 days, we expect Nintendo to eat the 10% tariff in order to keep the launch price at $450. However, the price could very easily increase if a higher tariff is added after 90 days. It is a cautionary tale.
