Niantic’s Pokémon Go has recorded its highest player spending of the year thus far during the Pokémon Go Tour Unova – Global weekend.

The latest instalment in the annual Tour series – this time with a focus on Unova Pokémon from Nintendo DS games Black, White, Black 2 and White 2 – took place on March 1st and 2nd, 2025 and saw Pokémon Go earn $19.8 million.

The figure comes according to AppMagic data, combining gross player spending between the App Store and Google Play, meaning true earnings were likely higher still when including payments made on Pokémon Go’s web shop.

Shiny incentives

Pokémon Go Tour: Unova – Global followed shortly after February’s paid real-world Tour: Unova events in Taiwan and the US.

As has become a yearly tradition, the Global version offered players worldwide a delayed opportunity to capture and battle the same Pokémon species from Unova for free, albeit without the same level of community interaction offered in person.

Paid tickets were also available for Unova – Global to unlock extra rewards and earn an exclusive encounter with the highly rare Mythical Pokémon Victini.

An additional $4.99 purchase was also available for new Masterwork Research, which granted access to a paid-only quest line eventually leading to another Mythical encounter, this one with a shiny Meloetta.

Though Meloetta has existed in the main series games since 2011, its shiny version was never available prior to October 2024. At that time it was finally released as a reward in the storage app Pokémon Home, unlocked by completing the entire Scarlet and Violet PokéDex of over 650 Pokémon.

A one-off purchase in Go just a few months later was likely much more achievable for many.

Gross player spending in the days before and during Unova – Global

Pokémon Go’s daily revenue verged on $10m on March 1st, up 46% over the day prior and making this its most lucrative day of 2025 thus far. Spending hardly slipped at all on March 2nd, at $9.8m, earning Pokémon Go Tour: Unova – Global its most successful days since July 14th, 2024, when revenue hit $11.1m.

Unova – Global also outperformed last year’s Sinnoh – Global event, the previous instalment in the Tour series which took place on February 24th and 25th, 2024. Those two days saw Go earn $18.6m, roughly 6% less than the 2025 edition.

Although, Unova – Global’s $19.8m still came just short of Hoenn – Global’s $20m in 2023.

With staple shiny Legendary Pokémon encouraging players to spend on Raids, limited-time quests keeping players logged in, themed Pokémon species lineups tapping into nostalgia and series-wide rarities available for a price, it’s evident that Niantic has the formula down to make Tour events a success.

Unova – Global was no exception, further establishing Tour as one of Go’s biggest events of the year, often only behind the anniversary.

The formula has also been tested in Niantic’s second-biggest AR game, Monster Hunter Now, to “roaring success”.
