Netflix has laid off an undisclosed number of staff at Oxenfree developer Night School Studio.
As reported by Game Developer, which spoke to current and former staff, the redundancies won’t affect the studio’s current projects but came as a surprise to employees when announced in January.
Night School Studio was acquired by Netflix back in 2021 and became part of the company’s games expansion.
Sweeping changes
Netflix offers exclusive mobile and streaming games through its subscription service. Last year it appointed a new president, former Epic Games EVP of development Alain Tascan, with the division going through a restructure since.
In October 2024, Netflix shut down its AAA studio Team Blue, despite hiring top industry veterans for an original multiplatform game. Meanwhile, VP of external games Leanne Loombe left the firm at the start of the year.
The streaming giant has cancelled six upcoming titles but plans to expand its catalogue in 2025, with WWE 2K mobile games becoming Netflix exclusives this autumn.
