The past year has been a tough one for many in the games industry, which has been hammered by layoffs and studio closures.

The sector was struck by a lack of investment, slow growth and wider economic troubles. While there are green shoots of the industry hitting growth – there have been some enormous successes like Scopely’s Monopoly Go in the past couple of years – it’s clear not everyone felt that impact.

Gone is the mantra of ‘survive to ‘25’, replaced with what some are trying to optimistically call ‘thrive in 2025’.

So how do developers really feel about the games market? What are the big challenges and opportunities they face right now?

To find out, we conducted our Mobile Games Industry Trends Survey to get the opinions of industry professionals on the key trends and hot topics in the games industry right now, as well as gather more detail on the makeup of the sector.

Hot topics

Of course, as mentioned, layoffs were high up on the list of key trends on respondents’ minds. It was cited as the biggest trend of 2024 by 56.7% of those surveyed – above rising UA costs, app store regulation and a shift to cross-platform games.

When it comes to the biggest threats facing the sector, privacy changes and rising UA costs were highlighted as two major concerns. High marketing and development costs, as well as a lack of investment, were also high up on the list.

In a tough market, we also asked how many games developers and publishers had released over the past 12 months. Just over 40% said none, while 22.2% said they had launched one title.
