New Virtua Fighter Receives ‘Pre-Development In-Engine’ Footage, And It Looks Stunning
SEGA announced that Like A Dragon masterminds Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio are working on a new Virtua Fighter game at The Game Awards 2024 in December, and has now provided a quick glimpse at the project during CES this week.
The stunning-looking footage isn’t actual gameplay, as SEGA confirmed that it’s based on ‘pre-development in-engine’ footage, but it still gives us a solid idea of what to expect from the next instalment in the venerable fighting game franchise. Confirmation of a new Virtua Fighter game was given somewhat unexpectedly during an interview late last year with SEGA’s transmedia boss.

The brainchild of Shenmue and Hang-On creator Yu Suzuki, Virtua Fighter pioneered 3D fighting games following its release back in 1993 in arcades, and was followed by a Sega Saturn release in 1994. Virtua Fighter 2 and Virtua Fighter 3 appeared on the Saturn and Dreamcast, respectively, and following SEGA’s withdrawal from the hardware business in 2001, the franchise moved to other formats including PlayStation 2.
The new Virtua Fighter game has yet to attract a release date but is obviously still in the early stages of production.
