Sonic’s Ben Schwartz says a Smash Bros. movie would “be bananas,” thinks there’s a way to make it happen

There was a time when Sonic in Smash Bros. was nothing more than a pipe dream from fans on both sides of the fence. There were years or rumors as well, and then Nintendo and SEGA finally made it happen with Smash Bros. Brawl. That’s when the impossible was made possible, and now many are wondering if the same thing could happen in the world of cinema.

Mario made a huge splash in Hollywood with his animated debut, and Sonic has been cranking out fan-favorite movies for years now. We also know that Nintendo has a Legend of Zelda movie in the works, and SEGA is bringing multiple franchises to the big screen as well. With all these gaming icons getting movie treatments, is there a world where a Smash Bros. movie could bring everyone together? One major player hopes so.

In an interview with Variety, Sonic film franchise voice actor Ben Schwartz was asked about what he’d like to see in terms of a Sonic crossover movie. That’s where Schwartz shared his desire to see a Smash Bros. film, and also shared why he thinks Hollywood could be inching towards the idea.

What I really think could be bananas is if we get a “Super Smash Bros.” spinoff, but that would take so many different studios being kind to each other at the same time. But the idea that we get to build our own franchise that lives on its own, and we have so many characters within this franchise, that we can do three, four, five, six — that’s what I’m concentrating on and that’s what I love. If you want to have a battle royale with a bunch of people we all love in video games, because I’m a video game nerd, I would not be against it. I would see if Paramount would let me go play. But I think that right now, it’s “Sonic 3” and if we can get to “Sonic 4” we have so much stuff we want to explore.

We’re getting closer. There’s a “Pikachu” movie that already exists. So if you can get all these studios that oftentimes compete with each other to make the same movie and somehow split the profits, that would be wonderful.
