Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered was led by a fan who previously created their own remaster

Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered recently released on Switch, revamping the classic PS1 titles for a new generation of gamers. The project, spearheaded by Aspyr and Crystal Dynamics restores the pair of titles with higher-resolution textures, models and VFX, and much more. It’s been extremely well received by longtime fans of the games, and now we know who’s mostly to thank for the excellent upgrade.

Noclip recently released a documentary all about Legacy of Kain in general, along with Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered. This gives us a look into the project’s development, showcasing the director for both titles. That director is Monika Erősová, and the reason she was put in charge of the revamp is due to their extensive work on the franchise as a fan.

It turns out prior to being picked up for the Remastered team, Monika had created their own fan-made HD remaster of the first Soul Reaver title. That, coupled with her encyclopedic knowledge of the game in general, made her a must-have collaborator if Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered was going to achieve the heights Aspyr and Crystal Dynamics were looking for.

Monika also brought a ton of her work with her, as she already had original textures assembled, which put a huge dent in the work that had to be done. From there, the team updated roughly 4,500 textures for Soul Reaver 1 and 2,800 for Soul Reaver 2 for what you see in the Remastered releases.

To learn more about Monika and this project in general, you can check out the documentary below.
