PS5 Tops August US Hardware Sales As PS Portal Continues To Put In A Strong Performance
Circana’s Mat Piscatella has taken to X to share the latest North American video game hardware data, confirming PS5 is once again the top in terms of console unit and dollar sales, followed by Xbox Series.
However, the analyst noted that hardware spending for the month saw a 36% decline year-on-year, recording a total of $280 million. Accessories also recorded a drop of 3% in terms of consumer spending compared to the same period last year, although the PlayStation Portal is still doing despite game pad spending falling 10% year-on-year.

Elsewhere, Piscatella noted that the PS5 DualSense Midnight Black controller was the best-selling accessory for August in terms of dollar sales, with PlayStation Portal ranks as the best-seller year-to-date. Finally, the PS5 Pulse Headset is the best-selling headset in year-to-date consumer spending, with overall spending within the Headset and Headphone sector seeing a 10% increase year-on-year.
Sony is gearing up for the release of its next major hardware release in the form of the PS5 Pro, which arrives on November 7, 2024. The new system, which carries a hefty price tag of $699.99, offers far more power than the standard PS5, allowing games to run with improved visual fidelity and frame rates. Its Boost function also enhances the performance of over 8,500 backwards compatible PS4 games.
