Epic Games has introduced new parental controls to limit children’s playtime on Fortnite and Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN).
The new control measures, introduced today, October 1st, allow parents and guardians to dictate both total playtime and play windows, setting which hours of the day play is to be permitted.
Counting down the hours
Fortnite’s new parental settings appear as an option on the game’s main menu, as well as online via the Epic Account Portal, with playtime caps applied per account rather than device. If a child hits their daily limit on console but uses the same account on mobile, the limit will still be maxed unless they switch to an alternate account.
If a time limit is imposed, a child will begin to be notified of their remaining minutes once they’re down to half an hour, though this countdown will pause when the game is inactive, such as if their console or phone enters sleep mode.
Once the allotted time has elapsed, parents and guardians are able to override limitations should they choose to grant some extra time.
Adults who opt into Time Reports can also view and monitor a breakdown of their child’s time spent across Fortnite and UEFN. A playtime graph also notes any extra time granted. The report totals up to a weekly total, which should help adults make informed decisions about how much additional playtime to allow, if any.
The new controls join a host of parental safety features like social permissions, language filters and purchase settings.
“Our Parental Controls let you choose how your child plays and interacts with others across Epic’s games and experiences, including Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys,” said Epic Games.
These tools let you make informed decisions about what is right for your family and manage access to social features such as voice and text chat, purchasing permissions, and more.
“Today we are introducing two new parental controls: Time Limit Controls and Time Reports. These new parental controls will enable parents and guardians to manage and view how much time their child spends in Fortnite and Unreal Editor for Fortnite.”
This October is also expected to bring about Epic Games’ new content marketplace Fab.
