Bungie’s Marathon Could Reportedly Be $40, Rather Than Another F2P Shooter
It’s a big year for games under-or-at-$40. Helldivers 2 stunned the world when it launched and it only had a $40 buy-in. Palworld only asked for $30, and then of course there are indie titles like Animal Well and Balatro that are worth far more than their price-of-admission.
And then there was Concord, which was also $40, and could potentially go down as one of the biggest flops in video game history, considering that after an alleged near-decade of development, it was taken offline and copies refunded in less than two weeks.
The next big $40 game we might see on the market, according to a new report from The Game Post is Bungie’s upcoming Marathon. According to sources that spoke to The Game Post, that’s the price Bungie is going to set at launch.
At least, that’s what the conversation was. It could have very easily changed in a post-Concord world, which The Game Post acknowledges but stands strong that a $40 price tag was being discussed.
So they perhaps talked about it, which is different from actually doing it, though if the game was already set up for a more premium approach rather than just a free-to-play game with battle passes and microtransactions up the wazoo, it could still be the case by the time launch comes.
If we’re lucky, Concord’s failure convinced them that Marathon needs to be sold for even cheaper, if it’s not going to be free-to-play.
