Hidetaka Miyazaki Says Lowering Elden Ring’s Difficulty Would ‘Break The Game Itself’

Speaking during an interview with The Guardian, Hidetaka Miyazaki, President of FromSoftware, has said that lowering the difficult of Elden Ring would effectively break the game.

Miyazaki-san is currently speaking to press for the release of Shadow of the Erdtree, which launch today, and was asked in his talk with The Guardian about the difficulty of FromSoftware’s titles. Whether it’s Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls or Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the company’s games have always been known for their punishing difficulty.

If we really wanted the whole world to play the game, we could just crank the difficulty down more and more. But that wasn’t the right approach.

Had we taken that approach, I don’t think the game would have done what it did, because the sense of achievement that players gain from overcoming these hurdles is such a fundamental part of the experience. Turning down difficulty would strip the game of that joy – which, in my eyes, would break the game itself.

Elden Ring was released in February 2022 for PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One, and recently celebrated a milestone of 25 million players worldwide. Shadow of the Erdtree is out today and you can read our full review here.
