A new survey has revealed that around 70% of developers have begun to question the sustainability of live service model in video games.
600 developers were interviewed between February and March by Game Developer and presented a number of questions about business models and monetisation in video games, with one of them asking participants how concerned they are about the sustainability of live service business models.
39% of developers said they were “somewhat concerned”, with 31% admitting they were “very concerned.” One quarter said they were not concerned, while just 4% didn’t know either way.

Live service games are a popular business model for games nowadays, with the likes of Destiny 2, Warframe, and Apex Legends among the most profitable examples of the business model that are still going strong.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment recently announced that it will be pivoting towards live service games going forward, despite the fact its latest effort, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, didn’t exactly go down well with critics and gamers alike.
Sony also announced plans to release 12 live service games by the fiscal year ending March 2026, although last November the format holder revealed that it was delaying half these titles.
